About Town Permit Guide

Town ordinances answer everyday questions (can I keep chickens, how tall can my fence be, can I rent my place on Airbnb), but the answers are buried in long PDFs. We pull out the answer, explain it in plain English, and show you the exact text it comes from.

We're independent and not affiliated with any municipality. The site is supported by advertising and some affiliate links, which are labeled.

How these pages are made

We download each town's ordinances from its official website or online code. An AI model reads the full text and drafts an answer to a specific homeowner question, using only that text. Software then checks that every quoted passage appears word for word in the downloaded ordinance; pages that fail aren't published. A second review pass re-reads the original documents, including tables, to check numbers, verdicts, and how state law interacts with local rules.

Each page shows the date its ordinances were checked and reviewed, and links to the source documents so you can read the original text yourself. Where something can't be settled from the documents, the page says so and tells you who to ask. More on our methodology.

Corrections

Ordinances change and mistakes happen. If something is wrong or out of date, email us at hello@townpermitguide.com with the page and what you found. We check the source and fix confirmed errors, and we periodically re-download ordinances to catch amendments.
